George Henry Luck
was born in Edmonton in 1929 and obtained his senior matriculation through
Edmonton Public Schools. He earned a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from
the University of Alberta in 1951 and a M.Sc. in Soil Mechanics in 1953.
After working for several years in Alberta, Mr. Luck travelled to Montreal
to work for the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. He returned to Edmonton
as an Associate Planner with the Edmonton Regional Planning Commission,
and, after a four-year association with a local consulting engineering
firm, he opened his own consulting practice.
In 1966, George Luck joined Edmonton
Public Schools as Director of Planning, and later became the Assistant
Superintendent of School Facilities, a position he held until 1980.
In 1983 he was elected to the Edmonton Public School Board. He remained
on the board for nine years, serving as Chairman and Vice-Chairman.
Mr. Luck was also a member of the City of Edmonton Names Advisory Committee,
chairman of the Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan, and an executive
member of the Alberta School Boards' Association.
An active member of the community,
George Luck served as umpire for little league baseball, was chairman
of the Edmonton branch of the Community Planning Association of Canada,
and was a steward of St. Paul's Church in Edmonton and Riverview United
Church in Calgary. In 1964 he became a member of the Town Planning Institute
of Canada and in 1989 was honoured with a life membership in the Association
of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists.
Edmonton Public Schools is proud
to have been associated with Mr. George H. Luck, and honoured to name
a school in recognition of a man who demonstrated the skills knowledge,
and attitudes that are inherent to lifelong learning.
